A succesful wheelie is achieved by smoothly and economically transferring weight to the rear of the machine. The smoother this is done the better. The task of getting the front wheel in the air is a matter of, firstly, compressing the front end by gently rolling back the throttle while at the same time pushing down on the bars. As the suspension rebounds, roll on the throttle and smoothly transfer your weight backwards. Try to imagine the weight from the front of the machine 'flowing' to the back. Once the machine and your body have achieved equilibrium, the wheelie can be maintained through small inputs of throttle, rear brake and clutch, as well as subtle movements of your body. Good riders can carry a wheelie almost indefinately.
