GASGAS THANKS SAM SUNDERLAND AS RALLY-RAID STAR ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

Thank you, Sam! It’s a bittersweet moment for GASGAS as we announce that our rally hero Sam Sunderland has decided to hang up his boots and retire from professional motorcycle racing. Sam’s journey with GASGAS and the company has been super successful, and we’re beyond proud of everything he has achieved with the team.

  • Sunderland to retire from professional motorcycle racing
  • Sam’s outstanding career included two world championships and two Dakar wins
  • Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing wish Sam all the best for the future

Joining Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing for the 2022 season, Sam kicked off his stint on the RX 450F with a bang by claiming victory in the 2022 Dakar Rally – the first ever win for GASGAS at the world’s toughest rally-raid. And that was just the beginning! Sam kept the momentum going with stellar performances at each FIM World Rally-Raid Championship round in 2022, ultimately clinching his second world championship title. What a year!

Sam first joined the company back in 2014, and during his time racing for the team he secured no less than two world championships and two Dakar victories, not to mention multiple stage and event wins along the way. Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing couldn’t be more grateful for Sam’s passion, dedication, and sheer awesomeness he brought to every race. Sam will continue working with the team, using his vast experience in a support and development role. Thank you for everything, Sam, we’re already looking forward to working closely together again in the future!

Sam Sunderland: “It is with gratitude, humility, a bit of sadness, but without regret, that I announce my retirement from motorcycle racing after having a career that I dreamed of once upon a time. From winning two world championships to my two Dakar victories, it’s been an incredible run. I would like to thank everyone that has been a part of this chapter and I’m looking forward to staying close to the team and playing a part in supporting their race efforts in the future.”

Andreas Hölzl – Rally Team Manager: “We would like to say a massive thank you to Sam for his time with Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing. I speak for the whole team when I say we’re sad to hear that Sam is retiring from racing, but we completely respect his decision and thank him for everything he has done for us over the years. Beyond being a phenomenal racer, Sam is a fantastic person – always supportive, motivating, and a true team player. He is a huge part of the GASGAS family, and we look forward to working with him again in new and exciting ways in the future.”

Pit Beirer – Motorsports Director: “Sam joined the company back in 2014, and since then his passion, dedication, and results have been exceptional. He not only secured two world championships and two Dakar victories, but he played a massive part in the successes of the whole team. Over the years, our relationship with Sam became stronger and stronger, and with his move to Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing in 2022, he continued to make history. While it’s tough to see Sam go, we respect his decision. I’d like to personally thank Sam for everything he put into the team and wish him well for the future.”

Rockstar Energy GASGAS Factory Racing’s Justin Barcia made a welcome return to racing in Round 5 of the 2025 AMA Pro Motocross Championship at today's Southwick National, putting forward an impressive first appearance of the outdoor season to claim ninth overall in 450MX. Justin Barcia returns to competition at Southwick! BAMBAM immediately back inside the top 10 at Round 5 Casey Cochran unfortunately sidelined for the weekend Equipped with the RED-hot GASGAS MC 450F Factory Edition, BAMBAM returned to the sandy Massachusetts venue following an extended time on the sidelines due to a knee injury sustained late in the Supercross series. In displaying his ever-consistent front-running potential, Barcia powered to a hard-fought P10 in Moto 1, before running inside the top-five during the early stages of Moto 2. Still building endurance after his time out injured, the number 51 would finish P9 in the race and overall. Justin Barcia: "Today was challenging! It was good to be back with the crew and the team. I wouldn’t say it was a fun day because Southwick is pretty brutal! The fans are awesome, so that was a positive, and a top 10 is not too bad after coming straight from therapy. We’ll take it, and we’ve got some things to build on, so that is good. I ripped a good start in Moto 2, so I was happy with that, I showed some grit, and now onto RedBud!" In 250MX, Ryder DiFrancesco posted the 11th fastest qualifying time onboard his GASGAS MC 250F Factory Edition, before a tough opening encounter left him in 22nd position at race's end. Rebounding in Moto 2, DiFrancesco would be in the fight for the top 10, eventually claiming a P13 moto score for 15th overall. Ryder DiFrancesco: “Qualifying was better here, but I need to be better with racing on the weekends, taking what I learn during the week and applying it to the weekend. I finally got a good start in the second Moto, and we’ll carry that into RedBud.” Southwick unfortunately resulted in 250MX talent Casey Cochran missing both motos after suffering a dislocated shoulder in an incident during the second qualifying session. He had earlier posted the ninth-quickest time this morning, and is now scheduled to undergo further evaluation on his injury this week. Sean Murphy, Rockstar Energy GASGAS Factory Racing Team Manager: "It was very unfortunate that Casey crashed during qualifying, resulting in a dislocated shoulder. He’s shown great potential so far this motocross season, and it’s tough to see him have to sit out at Southwick. We’re grateful to the Alpinestars medical crew for doing their best to get his shoulder back in safely. Casey will undergo an MRI next week and we’re hoping to have a clearer picture of the injury by the middle of the week." Casey Cochran finishes sixth overall in 250MX 14th overall the end result for Ryder D at Thunder Valley Progression evident for both riders after three rounds! After running in fifth place during the opening stages, Casey would go on to capture a season-high P6 moto finish and sixth overall for the weekend. With his Colorado result, Cochran rises to 10th in the 250MX point standings after the opening three rounds. Casey Cochran: “Overall, it was a good day in Colorado. We made some big improvements! Unfortunately, it was a bad start that cost me in the first moto, because I had to work through a lot of traffic in that one. I'm happy with my riding, had a good start in the second moto with a solid finish, so we're looking forward to keeping this momentum going!” 250MX teammate DiFranceso finished the first Moto in P15, while he had to settle for a 13th-place result onboard his GASGAS MC 250F Factory Edition in Moto 2 after a first turn fall. Those finishes resulted in 14th overall for the round, as he too continues to rebuild from injury. Ryder DiFrancesco: "My riding was better in Colorado, I just struggled to get off the gate and went down in the first turn of the second moto.
