DEMANDING DAY FOR GASGAS FACTORY RACING AT MXGP OF ITALY

STANDING CONSTRUCT’S GLENN COLDENHOFF CLAIMS SEVENTH OVERALL IN MXGP WHILE DIGA PROCROSS’ SIMON LANGENFELDER RACES TO 13TH IN MX2

It was a challenging day for GASGAS Factory Racing at the MXGP of Italy where Glenn Coldenhoff faired best to record consistent results and claim seventh overall. Despite feeling unwell, Glenn’s MXGP teammate Ivo Monticelli put in a valiant effort at the first of his home GPs to earn more valuable world championship points. In MX2, DIGA Procross’ Simon Langenfelder continued his impressive run of good starts and consistent results to earn 13th overall while teammate Jeremy Sydow’s return to action was short lived as he injured his foot during the opening lap of moto one and was forced to withdraw from the event.

  • GASGAS Factory Racing machinery faultless on Italian hardpack
  • Standing Construct's MC 450F claims more MXGP class holeshots
  • World championship points for Coldenhoff, Monticelli and Langenfelder

Glenn Coldenhoff arrived at the MXGP of Italy almost fully-recovered from the painful rib injury he sustained just over three weeks ago. In race one, the Dutchman didn’t get the best jump when the gate dropped but still emerged from the first turn well inside the top 10. Involved in an intense battle for the leading positions during the first half of the race, the Standing Construct rider progressed to seventh place by lap seven, holding his position to the checkered flag.

Race two was somewhat of a damage limitation ride for Coldenhoff. Getting closed down as he approached the tight opening corner, a race-long battle ensued with the 29-year-old charging for the entire moto. Claiming an eighth-place finish for seventh overall, Coldenhoff now lies sixth in the MXGP World Championship.

The MXGP of Italy wasn’t what it was expected to be for Ivo Monticelli. Picking up a stomach issue in the days leading up to his home GP, a race one holeshot was the highlight of the day for the Italian. Completely drained of energy prior to both gate drops, Monticelli dug deep to earn two point-scoring rides and now looks to recover ahead of round seven on Wednesday.

The lightning fast MC 250F of Simon Langenfelder rocketed the DIGA Procross Factory Juniors rider to a strong start in the opening MX2 moto. Running at the head of the field during the early laps, he slipped off in a slick corner. Able to remount quickly, the 16-year-old raced confidently in and around the top 10 for the whole moto, going on to finish 12th in the opening race of the day.

After another good jump at the start of moto two, Langenfelder hit a heavily watered part of the start straight, slowing his charge towards the first corner. Riding a controlled and comfortable pace, the German clicked off consistent laps in 15th place for much of the moto and claimed 16th at the flag. The youngster ended the GP 13th overall.

Jeremy Sydow returned to the MX2 World Championship in Faenza. After qualifying 16th, the young German crashed early in the opening race, injuring his ankle. Jeremy took no further part in the GP.

In the EMX125 class, GASGAS riders claimed impressive results at the second round of the series. Guillem Farres secured a strong runner-up position overall, closely followed by David Braceras in third. Gerard Congost rounded out the top five with a pair of consistent rides.

Glenn Coldenhoff: “Not quite the day that I was looking for. I felt great in practice and qualifying, and I was seventh fastest so this was good. We are all quite similar in in pace so seventh is ok. My start wasn’t great in race one, just my reaction time was just a little slow, which was unfortunate. The start on this track is so important so it was a tough race all the way to the end. My start in race two wasn’t much better unfortunately but I came back to eighth. We’ll go away from here, watch the races to analyze what I’m doing and then practice starts ahead of Wednesday.”

Ivo Monticelli: “Today was a really big shame and not the home GP I was expecting! I’ve been training a lot before this race and a few days ago I developed a stomach issue, which really drained me of energy. I was able to holeshot and lead the opening lap of the first race – that was the highlight of the day for me. From there I just had to ride a steady pace to ensure a finish. Same with the second race really. I went 19-17, which scored me some points. I’m disappointed for the Standing Construct GASGAS team and myself and I’m hoping to feel better for Wednesday.”

Simon Langenfelder: “It was a pretty decent and consistent day for me. Qualifying went well and that gave me a good gate pick for the races and then very nearly pulled the holeshot in the first moto! Unfortunately I hit a slick part of a corner, which caused me to tip over but I was able to get up quickly. I was able to find my rhythm again and then raced in 12th until the end. I actually tipped over again after looking at my pitboard for too long towards the end of the race and I crashed again! I was able to finish 12th which was great considering I crashed twice. Second moto, I hit a soft spot on the start straight and that caused me to not have such a good start. I didn’t fall and finished 16th for 13th overall so it was a good result and I look forward to Wednesday.”

Jeremy Sydow: “I was excited to be back racing on my GASGAS! I qualified 16th and I was happy with that. I had a decent start in the first race, but then I came together with another rider, which injured my foot. I will see my doctor Monday morning to see exactly what the damage is. I’m really disappointed to miss more racing and I hope for a quick recovery.”

Both Standing Construct GASGAS Factory Racing and DIGA Procross GASGAS Factory Juniors return to FIM Motocross World Championship action on September 9 for the second of three consecutive events to be held at the Faenza venue.
